First Day of Spring
At 2:58PM PST today, spring will officially begin in the Northern Hemisphere. According to NASA, the planet will begin slowly tilting toward the sun, which will lead to days with more sunlight, while today the length of day and night are almost equal. The date changes every year (to either March 19, 20, or 21) due to the fact that the Earth does not take precisely 365 days to revolve around the sun.
People across the planet mark the beginning of spring in different ways. Iranians mark today as the Persian New Year, or Nowruz. Holi, which is a major festival in India, falls on March 20 this year, and observers celebrate by splashing each other with colored powder and water.
Happy Spring Equinox, Happy Persian New Year, and Happy Holi!
